A blackbelt in mental “judo”

Several years ago I received a resume where the candidate was trying to impress, I think, with his athletic accomplishments….he claimed that he was a black belt in “mental” judo! While he didn’t have the required qualifications, we spent a lot of time speculating just what this could mean. I finally couldn’t resist any longer so I called to find out just this could be. To my surprise he indicated that he had made a point of reading all the “required” texts on judo, its origins, history, and the finer points of the techniques and that he was able to “imagine” contests that he would have with a worthy, imaginary opponent; how he would counter that oponent’s attach moves and then he would throw them and pin them every time. Therefore, he considered himself a bona fide judo black belt. Needless to say, our conversation about the CEO job did not go any further.
